Privacy Policy

Last updated September 21, 2026

Bluegill is operated by Spooled LLC, doing business as Bluegill ("Bluegill," "we," "us," or "our"). This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect through the Bluegill mobile application and fishbluegill.com (together, the "Service"), how we use it, and the choices you have.

If you have questions about this policy, contact us at support@fishbluegill.com.

1. Information We Collect

Information you give us

Account information. When you create an account we collect your email address and name. You choose a password, which is stored in hashed form by our authentication provider and is never visible to us.

Profile information. You may optionally add a profile photo, your city and state, years of experience, your specialty, your home lake, your favorite lake, your boat or rig, preferred species, and fishing techniques. All of this is optional and you can edit or remove it at any time.

Tournament activity. When you register for events, join clubs or trails, or fish in tournaments, we store your registrations, team or partner assignments, catch weights, fish counts, big bass weights, placements, and season points.

Content you create. This includes direct messages to other users, club group chat messages, announcements you post as a tournament director, club and event details, rules, prizes, and sponsor listings.

Applications and requests. If you apply to become a tournament director, we store your application answers. If you request to join a club, we store your request, any message you include, and your partner's name if you provide one.

Photos. You may upload a profile photo, club logos and banner images, and photographs of paper scoresheets for automated score import.

Location you type in. You may enter a city and state on your profile, and an address when you create an event. We convert what you type into approximate coordinates and store them, so that clubs and events can be sorted by distance from you and shown on a map.

This is city-level information that you enter yourself. The app does not read your device's GPS. It never requests your current position, in the foreground or in the background, and it does not track your movements. Your device may still show a location permission prompt, because the system library we use to turn a typed address into coordinates requires that permission before it will run.

Location is entirely optional. Without it the app works normally, except that distance sorting and "Near Me" filtering have no point to measure from.

Information collected automatically

Push notification tokens. If you enable notifications, we store a device token so we can deliver alerts about messages, announcements, event reminders, join requests, and results. This is the only information the app records that you do not type in yourself.

Information we do not collect

No payments. We do not process payments. Club dues and event entry fees are recorded as a paid or unpaid status only, and any money changes hands directly between you and your tournament director outside the Service. We do not collect payment card numbers or bank details.

No analytics, advertising, or tracking. The app contains no analytics SDK, no advertising SDK, and no crash-reporting SDK. We do not collect usage logs or behavioural data, we do not read advertising identifiers, we do not show advertising, we do not build advertising profiles, and we do not track you across other companies' apps or websites.

No phone numbers, mailing addresses, or billing addresses. The app has no field for any of these and never asks for them.

2. How We Use Information

We use the information described above to:

  • Create and maintain your account and profile
  • Show you clubs, trails, and tournaments, including ones near your location
  • Process registrations and manage rosters, teams, and waitlists
  • Calculate results, leaderboards, season standings, and career statistics
  • Deliver messages, club chat, announcements, and push notifications
  • Let tournament directors manage their organizations, approve members, and record scores
  • Read paper scoresheets you photograph and convert them into structured results
  • Review tournament director applications
  • Respond to support requests
  • Detect and prevent fraud, abuse, and violations of our Terms of Service
  • Comply with legal obligations

3. How Information Is Shared

Information visible to other users

Bluegill is a community product, and some information is visible to others by design:

  • Your name, profile photo, city and state, and profile details appear on your public angler profile
  • Your tournament results, weights, placements, points, and career statistics appear on event leaderboards and season standings visible to other users
  • Your name and team appear on club rosters and event participant lists
  • Messages you send are visible to their recipients; club chat messages are visible to club members
  • If you create a club, trail, or event, your email address is shown as the organizer contact on that organization's or event's page, so anglers know who to ask. This applies only to organizers. Ordinary members' email addresses are not visible to other users anywhere in the app

Profile photos and club images are stored in publicly readable storage, which means the image file itself can be accessed by anyone who has its direct link. Do not upload images you consider private.

Service providers

We share information with vendors who process it on our behalf:

  • Supabase — hosts our database, user authentication, and file storage
  • Expo — delivers push notifications to your device
  • Anthropic — processes photographs of scoresheets to extract results (see Section 4)
  • Resend — sends transactional email such as notifications and account messages
  • Google — renders the maps shown in the Android app, and converts typed addresses into coordinates
  • Apple — renders the maps shown in the iOS app, and converts typed addresses into coordinates

These providers are permitted to use your information only to provide services to us.

Other disclosures

We may disclose information if required by law, subpoena, or valid legal process; to protect the rights, safety, or property of Bluegill, our users, or the public; or in connection with a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, in which case we will notify you before your information becomes subject to a different privacy policy.

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it with third parties for their own advertising purposes.

4. Automated Scoresheet Processing

Bluegill offers an optional feature that lets tournament directors photograph a paper scoresheet and have the results read automatically instead of typing them in.

When this feature is used, the photograph is uploaded to our private storage and sent to Anthropic, an artificial intelligence provider, which extracts the names, weights, and fish counts written on the sheet and returns them as structured data. This means the image — including any angler names and results written on it — is transmitted to and processed by Anthropic.

This feature is used at the discretion of tournament directors. If you would prefer your results not be processed this way, ask your tournament director to enter scores manually, which is always available.

5. Push Notifications

If you grant permission, we send push notifications for messages, club chat, announcements, event reminders, join requests and approvals, registration confirmations, posted results, and dues reminders.

You can control which categories you receive in the app under Settings, and you can turn notifications off entirely in your device settings.

6. Data Retention and Account Deletion

We keep your information for as long as your account is active.

You can delete your account at any time from Settings → Delete Account in the app. Deletion is permanent and cannot be undone. It removes your profile, your login credentials, your messages, your tournament results, your club memberships and event registrations, and any photos you uploaded.

If you are a tournament director, deleting your account also deletes the organizations you created, along with their events, member lists, schedules, results, announcements and sponsors. Before the deletion runs, the app shows you exactly what will be removed and asks you to confirm twice. If you want an organization to continue without you, contact us before deleting your account.

Deleting your account does not remove your name from a copy of a result another member has already exported or saved outside Bluegill. We may also retain limited information where the law requires it or where it is needed to resolve a dispute.

If you would like help deleting your account or have questions about what is retained, email support@fishbluegill.com.

7. Your Choices and Rights

Regardless of where you live, you can:

  • View and edit your profile information in the app
  • Choose whether to grant location and notification permissions, and change your mind at any time
  • Control notification categories in Settings
  • Delete your account in the app

If you are a California resident, the CCPA gives you the right to know what personal information we collect and how we use it, to request a copy of it, to request deletion, and not to be discriminated against for exercising these rights. We do not sell personal information. To exercise these rights, email support@fishbluegill.com.

If you are in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, restrict, or object to processing of your personal information, and to data portability. Contact us at the address above.

We will verify your identity before acting on a request, typically by confirming control of the email address on the account.

8. Security

We use industry-standard measures to protect your information, including encryption in transit, database-level access controls that restrict what each user can read and write, and hashed password storage. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

9. Children's Privacy

Bluegill is not intended for children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child under 13 has provided us information, email support@fishbluegill.com and we will delete it.

Anglers under 18 should have a parent or guardian review these terms with them before participating in tournaments.

10. Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the "Last updated" date above. If the changes are significant, we will provide additional notice in the app or by email. Continuing to use the Service after an update means you accept the revised policy.
